An ancient town, lying on the north bank of the river Arade. Once the capital of the kingdom of the Algarve, it was most heavily fortified and fiercely fought over in Portugal. Today the magnificent red sandstone castle is it’s jewel in the crown, overlooking the town from high on the hillside, it was the scene of many bloody battles during the Middle Ages. Silves is only approx 45 minute drive to beaches, but has many sites worth a visit including the Moorish Gate, Pillory and the Silves Cathedral, also the historical oddities such as the Crucifix of Portugal and The Old Bridge. |
